Scientific Name: Apis spp.
Honey bees (or honeybees) are social insects primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests from wax.
They have been known for honey production and more importantly in crop pollination for food production.
Apis mellifera (European honey bees) and Apis florea (Arabian dwarf honey bees) are the common honey bee species in the UAE environment. The A. mellifera hybrid, the Africanized honey bees or killer bees are not reported to be present in the UAE.
Honeybees do sting, but they only sting once. The sting can be extremely painful if the stinger is not immediately removed. Persons allergic to insect stings will have a more severe reaction.
